L’agricoltura può essere rappresentata come punto di intersezione fra aspetti biofisici (piante, animali, microrganismi, terreno, acqua, atmosfera ecc.), tecnico economici (produzioni, tecnologie, mezzi tecnici, mercati, prezzi ecc.) e socio-politici (popolazioni, culture, istituzioni politiche ecc.). I problemi che un sistema siffatto pone alla ricerca sono di conseguenza di grande complessità soprattutto nel momento in cui si vogliano perseguire soluzioni rispettose della qualità dei prodotti della sicurezza dei consumatori e in armonia con l’ambiente. Queste problematiche presentano una vera e propria sfida per i ricercatori che operano nel settore agricolo e che si trovano di fronte ad un sistema che deve essere analizzato con il più elevato livello di specializzazione disciplinare possibile senza però perderne di vista l’unitarietà e la complessità. L’avanzamento delle conoscenze e l’individuazione delle migliori soluzioni tecniche risultano pertanto strettamenti legati ad un approccio multidisciplinare che preveda l’indagine a tutti i livelli di scale spazio-temporali coinvolgenti una problematica. Secondo il rapporto della Fao "Review of Evidence on Drylands Pastoral Systems and Climate Change", «Le praterie hanno un vasto potenziale inutilizzato per attenuare il cambiamento climatico, assorbendo e stoccando la CO2.
La penisola italiana è particolarmente esposta al rischio di accidentali introduzioni di insetti dannosi e l’ampio spettro dei suoi parametri climatici favorisce nelle regioni meridionali anche l’acclimatazione di specie di origine subtropicale.
L’Autorità europea per la sicurezza alimentare (EFSA) ha pubblicato un report scientifico sulla mortalità delle api in Europa e sul loro monitoraggio, che si basa su un progetto svolto in ben 27 Paesi europei. Data la centralità del tema, ci si attendeva un documento capace di fare chiarezza, sia in ordine allo stato di salute delle api in Europa, che riguardo al nesso esistente tra tale fenomeno e l’uso di sostanze chimiche, come i neonicotinoidi. In sintesi, le conclusioni che il report mette in evidenza riguardano la generale debolezza della maggior parte dei sistemi di sorveglianza analizzati ed una carenza di dati rappresentativi a livello nazionale – e comparabili a livello europeo – sulla perdita di colonie. Ciò è riconducibile anche ad una rilevata generale mancanza di standardizzazione ed armonizzazione, tanto riguardo ai sistemi di monitoraggio che all’analisi della casistica ed alla raccolta di informazioni.(...)
According to IFAP (International Federation of Agricultural Producers) agriculture stands as a central player in contributing answers to the current world’s challenges and multiple crises. Indeed, agriculture through its multiple functions offers essential services and livelihoods to a growing world population. Agriculture is at the heart of a green economy, and therefore is a driver of economic development in rural areas. IFAP’s President Ajay Vashee, at the invitation of the Deutscher Bauernverband (German Farmers’ Union), will give a keynote speech to a panel of 55 agriculture ministers from throughout the world at 11 AM on Saturday, January 16 at 11:00 AM at during International Green Week 2010 in Berlin, Germany. A launch of what will come to be the ‘Davos’ for agriculture, Ajay Vashee will address the complex challenges climate changes presents to farmers and the agricultural ministers.
Today marks the launch of the International Year of Biodiversity under the theme Biodiversity is Life – Biodiversity is Our Life. It is a theme of critical interest to farmers since biodiversity and agriculture are interdependent; both are also key elements to address climate change and food security. Conserving biodiversity is a shared responsibility of stakeholders worldwide, and farmers are willing to do their part. The International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) will be highlighting, throughout this year, the crucial role played by farmers to conserve ecosystems. IFAP will also be challenging national governments and the international community to put in place programs to help secure the planet’s biodiversity, while at the same time, ensuring that farmers have the necessary tools to increase food production by 70 percent by 2050 to feed a growing world population. ‘’The main issue for farmers is gaining recognition for the multiple roles that agriculture is expected to fulfil and identifying appropriate mechanisms in order to achieve them. We need to help and encourage farmers to improve their current practices, while ensuring they can sustain their families and remain competitive in the markets. These efforts all need be undertaken simultaneously, otherwise you will have food security problems or a compromised ecosystem,’’ said Ajay Vashee, IFAP President. Farmers understand the need to protect and conserve biodiversity, and their role in doing so. At the same time, it is crucial that they maintain the economic viability of their agricultural activities. In 2010, IFAP will strive to find genuine and long-lasting approaches to better conserve and enhance biological diversity that can be implemented by farmers, and will advocate positive and constructive policy approaches to governments and the Convention on Biological Diversity. “Through such practices as land set asides for wildlife and native species, conservation farming, organic farming, reforestation practices, pastoralism, rotational grazing and rehabilitation of degraded lands, farmers are contributing to the conservation and protection of biodiversity. However, this is a shared responsibility with the rest of society. All stakeholders need to participate. If these efforts are to be expanded on a global scale to reduce biodiversity degradation, appropriate funding, positive incentives for farmers such as payment for ecosystem services, training and policy implementation will be needed to achieve results,’’ concluded Vashee.
