This Sunday, 26th June, torture rehabilitation centres and human rights defenders around the world will mark the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
Together with torture survivors, their families and their communities, member centres of the 150-strong International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims are holding demonstrations, conferences, peace marches and other events on all continents.
This year, the theme adopted by the IRCT membership is that poverty is inextricably linked to torture: both as cause and effect. If you are poor, you are more likely to become a victim of torture, if you are a victim of torture, the devastating consequences often lead to an inability to provide for oneself or one's family, and in some cases where torture is endemic, leading to destitution for whole societies.
Inside detention centres, the poor cannot ‘buy’ justice, explains Professor Manfred Nowak, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and IRCT Patron. The rich and powerful are rarely detained, and the poor become scapegoats for crimes, tortured into confessions, and left in appalling conditions. And, the survivors of torture often have little access to much-needed rehabilitation services where they may rebuild their lives, physically, mentally, and socially. (...)
